Policy & Advocacy
As we learn more as a society about sex, gender, relationships, and overall health,
our sex education policies and standards should evolve as well. We believe in continued advocacy and policy tracking to ensure students receive the sex ed they deserve.
Our Current Policy Priorities
Our policy priorities center clarifying language and ensuring high quality, honest standards for Minnesota students' sex education in schools.
Currently, we are:

-
Defending the statewide health education standards
-
Minnesota is developing our first ever statewide health education standards to ensure more equal education for all. The standards cover a range of health topics like: nutrition, mental health, personal safety and violence prevention, sexual health and more.
-
Opponents to sex ed are trying to repeal this legislation and implementation. We’re here to amplify the voices of the vast majority of Minnesotans who want honest sex ed in our public schools.
-

-
Working to update Minnesota's STI education statute
-
Minnesota statute 121A.23 states that school districts must provide STI education that is “technically accurate” and helps students abstain from sexual activity until marriage.
-
We think students deserve more than
“technically accurate”, so we’re fighting for medical accuracy and the inclusion of STI prevention methods including and beyond abstinence.
-

-
Ensuring adequate professional development funding for health educators
-
With new statewide health education standards on their way, we want to ensure health teachers have the support and resources they need to implement great health ed.
-
This year, we are laying the foundation and pushing for both continued and increased professional development funds for health educators. Supported teachers are better teachers!

Policy and Implementation Tracking
A major challenge for any educational policy rests in its implementation. For sex education, several key groups are the most attune to changes in laws or standards: teachers, students, and parents.

That's why we focus our efforts on listening to these communities so we can support implementation efforts through community education, teacher training, and advocacy.
